Engraved Leather Patches

Laser engraving does not add anything. It removes and scorches the top of the leather, and the colour of the mark is the colour that burning produces. There is no ink involved anywhere in the process.

That is why the hide choice matters more than the artwork. Vegetable-tanned leather burns to a deep, rich brown against its own pale surface, which is the contrast people picture when they ask for an engraved patch. Chrome-tanned leather burns grey, smells acrid doing it, and never reaches that contrast.

And a black patch cannot be engraved legibly. There is nothing for a dark burn to contrast against, so you get a slightly duller black on black. If your brand is black, we will show you a debossed patch or a pale patch instead, before you have paid for anything.
