There is no ink in an engraved patch. The burn is the colour.
Customized Leather Patches makes patches to order — laser engraved, heat debossed, sew-on, heat-seal backed, vegan PU and small folded brand tags — supplied loose for your own decorators and machinists.

Laser engraving does not print anything onto leather. It scorches the top of it, and the colour of your logo is simply the colour that burning produces.
Once you know that, a lot of disappointing patches make sense. A black patch cannot be engraved legibly, because a dark burn has nothing to contrast against. Chrome-tanned leather burns grey and smells acrid doing it. Vegetable-tanned leather burns to the deep brown people are picturing when they ask for an engraved patch, which is why it is what we reach for.
So the first question we ask is not about your artwork. It is what colour the leather is and what the patch is going onto, because those two answers decide the marking method and the backing before anything is drawn.
Why we exist
Patches get quoted on size and quantity, from suppliers who treat every hide and every backing as interchangeable.
So a black patch gets engraved and arrives unreadable. A heat-seal patch gets pressed onto a waterproof shell and destroys the membrane. A workwear run gets an iron-on backing and comes out of the first industrial wash in the drum. Every one of those is avoidable with one question asked before the order.
Engrave or deboss
Engraving burns the surface, so it reads by colour. It needs a pale vegetable-tanned hide to work, and it is the deep rich brown mark most people mean by a leather patch.
Debossing presses a heated die in, so it reads by shadow. That makes it the right answer on black and dark leather where engraving is invisible, and the right answer on very small tags where shadow carries further than colour. The die is a real one-off cost, quoted separately and then held for reorders.
The backing decides where the patch can go
Sew-on, with a leather border for the stitch line, is the only attachment that survives an industrial laundry. Adhesive softens at those temperatures; stitching does not care.
Heat-seal is fast, invisible and excellent on cotton, canvas, fleece, caps and bags. It must never go on a waterproof membrane, because the press temperature destroys the membrane and the jacket. It is also poor on very stretchy fabric, where the patch cannot move with the cloth and peels at the edges. We ask what the host item is before quoting a backing.
Thickness is a fit decision, not a quality one
Patch leather is specified in ounces, and thicker is not better. It is just thicker.
Too thick and the patch dishes on a curved cap panel or drags on a soft garment. Too thin and the edges curl after a wash. We pick it from what the patch is being applied to and from the machine that will sew it.
What we actually make
Laser-engraved patches on vegetable-tanned hide. Heat-debossed patches for dark and black branding. Sew-on patches, plain-bordered or pre-punched at a stated hole pitch. Heat-seal backed patches with the press time and temperature supplied. Vegan PU and microfibre patches marked by deboss or print. And small folded brand tags and pull tabs laid out for the fold and the seam allowance.
How we price
No dollar figures on this site. Price moves with size, hide, marking method, backing and quantity, and it falls steeply into the thousands. Send the details and a real quote comes back the same day, with a lowest-price guarantee if you are already holding a cheaper one.
What we will talk you out of
Engraving a black patch. Heat-sealing onto a waterproof shell. Iron-on backings for laundered workwear. A deeper deboss on thin stock, which pushes a mirror of the mark through to the back. And a thick patch on a curved cap panel.
Every one of those costs us money to say and saves you more.
