Vegan & Faux Leather Patches

A vegan patch is a polyurethane or microfibre surface on a fabric backing. It looks remarkably close to leather now, it is consistent from sheet to sheet in a way hide never is, and it costs less.

It marks differently, and that is the part to get right. Lasering a PU surface melts rather than scorches: you can get a clean mark, but it is a shallow melt with a slight sheen rather than the deep brown burn you get on vegetable-tanned leather. Debossing works well, and printing works better on PU than it does on real leather.

It also does not develop a patina. A leather patch changes colour and softens with handling and a PU one looks the same in year three as on day one. For some brands that consistency is the selling point and for others it is exactly what they are trying to avoid.
