Heat-Seal Backed Patches

A heat-seal backing is a film laminated to the reverse of the patch. Under a heat press it melts into the fabric and holds without a single stitch showing, which is quick, clean and exactly what a lot of decorators want.

There are three cases where it is the wrong answer and we say so before quoting. Anything going through an industrial laundry, because the adhesive softens. Anything waterproof with a membrane, because the press temperature destroys the membrane and you have ruined the jacket. And highly stretchy fabric, because the patch cannot stretch with it and the bond peels at the edges.

Where it is right — cotton, canvas, fleece, most caps and bags — it is excellent, and the film also stiffens the patch slightly, which actually helps it sit flat on a soft garment.

Can I heat press a patch onto a waterproof jacket?

No. The press temperature destroys the membrane and the jacket stops being waterproof. Sew it, or choose a different host item — this is the mistake that costs the most money.

Will an iron-on patch come off in the wash?

Domestic washing at normal temperatures, no. Industrial laundry, yes — the adhesive softens. For anything commercially laundered, buy the sew-on version.
